If you’re an entrepreneur with a bold idea, Canada wants to hear from you. Through the Start-Up Visa Program, the Canadian government offers innovative business founders the opportunity to obtain permanent residency directly, while building companies that create jobs and strengthen Canada’s growing innovation economy.
At Immigria Consulting Firm, we help visionary entrepreneurs navigate this process with clarity and confidence. Here’s how you can bring your business dream to life in Canada.
The Start-Up Visa (SUV) is a Canadian business immigration program designed for entrepreneurs with high-potential ideas who can secure support from a designated Canadian organization, such as a venture capital fund, angel investor group, or business incubator recognized by the Government of Canada.
Its goal is simple: to connect global entrepreneurial talent with Canada’s innovation ecosystem, helping founders build businesses that are innovative, job-creating, and globally competitive.
Unlike many other programs that require years of temporary status before applying for PR, the Start-Up Visa allows you to apply directly once you meet the eligibility requirements.
And here’s the advantage, founders may be eligible for a work permit that lets them start building their business in Canada while their application is under review.
At Immigria Consulting Firm, we ensure every detail of your application aligns with the government’s standards, giving your business the best chance to succeed.
To qualify for the Start-Up Visa Program, applicants must meet four main requirements:
Qualifying business
You must own at least 10% of the voting rights, and together with your designated organization, hold more than 50% of the total voting rights.
You’ll also need to manage the business from within Canada after incorporation.
Letter of support
Secure a Letter of Support from one of IRCC’s designated organizations in Canada.
These organizations are officially authorized to invest in or support foreign-founded start-ups.
Language skills
Demonstrate at least Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 5 in English or French in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
Settlement funds
Show that you have enough money to support yourself and your family after arriving in Canada (the required amount depends on family size and is updated annually).
Your designated organization must be Canadian and appear on IRCC's official list. Depending on your project, you can:
Pitch your idea to a venture capital fund (minimum investment of $200,000),
Approach an angel investor group (minimum investment of $75,000), or
Apply to a business incubator (no set investment amount, but acceptance into their program).
The organization sends a Commitment Certificate to the government, and you receive a Letter of Support, the key document that allows you to apply for the Start-Up Visa.
At Immigria Consulting Firm, we guide clients through this stage, helping them present their ideas strategically and connect with reputable Canadian organizations.
According to Canada’s 2024 Annual Report to Parliament on Immigration, the average processing time for Start-Up Visa applications was approximately 37 months.
However, as of now, the current average is around 53 months.
Yes, that’s a long process, but here’s the good news: you don’t have to wait abroad while your application is processed. You can apply for a work permit to move to Canada and begin operating your start-up while your permanent residency application is being reviewed. This gives you valuable time to establish your business, build your network, and gain traction in the Canadian market before approval.
To maintain quality and reduce backlogs, the Government of Canada has temporarily limited each designated organization to a maximum of 10 complete group applications per year, until December 31, 2026. This makes preparation, accuracy, and credibility more important than ever.
